Poor Talented Girl

Betsy Ross is credited with making the first American Flag.  It had six pointed stars originally.  But George Washington liked five pointed stars better.

Betsy learned to sew from her father, an Upolstery worker, in Philadelphia.  When she married, she chose a man who was not a Quaker so her family refused to have much to do with her afterwards.

She joined the Congregational Church with her new husband.  Her new church community included George Washington.  He saw Betsy’s design for the flag and felt it represented his young army fighting for independence.

The founding fathers of this country were just a bunch of regular fellas.  But they had an idea that would revolutionize the world – independence from a governing monarchy.  “All Men are created equal.”  That idea was UNHEARD of 200 years ago.

Many woman find themselves fighting for their freedom.  But in order to earn it, they must exercise their voices.

Betsy, poor as she was, was also talented.  She used her talents to make her feelings about independence known.

I hope this story and this music, the theme song from the HBO TV series John Adams, inspires you to find your own voice.
