follow url Today is Share Your Care Day!  I thought it might be a good idea to let you in on how teachers are taught to care for the welfare of their students.  Today, I took an online training course on reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation of children.  If you see any of your friends (or you) going through situations discussed below, you should tell a teacher or school counselor immediately.  School counselors are trained to ask all the right questions to protect the students from situations that are hurting them.  As this is “Share Your Care Day” I’ll go into what I learned about reporting get link emotional abuse of children.

follow url Emotional abuse is harder to prove than physical abuse.  There are four ways that children are emotionally abused:

• Rejection/Ignoring/Withholding love
• Isolation
• Verbal assault/Put Downs “You’re Stupid!”
• Threats/Intimidation – “Ill give away the dog if you do/don’t do __________.

watch Teachers are trained to look for these warning signs of a student that is in distress:

1. Severe Depression
2. Severe Anxiety
3. Withdrawl from peers
4. Aggression
5. Crying for no reason
6. Low self esteem/worth – Telling themselves they are stupid.
7. Extreme fear, especially of adults.

go to link Neglect is also very emotionally damaging to children.  Neglect of a child occurs when the parent fails to provide the following:

• Supervision
• Food
• Clothing (weather appropriate)
• Shelter
• Medical Care (glasses, asthma medication)
• Protection
