New Hobby: Volunteering

As summer is approaching, I realize I may need to give you some good ideas for how to spend those “crazy, hazy, lazy days of summer.”  So, along with Mental Health Awareness month, I thought you might appreciate a few ideas for new hobbies.

Hobbies are things you do when you are not studying for school or going to school.  Hobbies can include things like dancing, hiking, playing video games.  Volunteering is one of my favorite hobbies.  It’s when you volunteer to do something for someone or a group.  Today, I volunteered my morning and afternoon to a meeting at my church.  We are struggling to gain members and we wanted to brainstorm why it was happening and how to make it stop.  I volunteered to facilitate (or lead) a meeting we’ll have in June to calendarize our annual events so we can be more organized in the future.

Volunteering is a great way to try new situations (churches, clubs, organizations) to see if they really fit you.  Plus, you help others and you get all these “warm fuzzies.” You get to feel good that you did something nice for someone else.

Purity – remember when you’d do my dishes?  You were always super cool to do them.  I know dishes are not your favorite thing.  But you did them without complaint.  And Bea – remember all those beautiful pictures you drew for me?  They made my kitchen so inviting.  You both did these things with a pure heart.

Imagine feeling good by just helping others.  Don’t get me wrong. You are not a servant of people. You can serve people.  There is a difference. So try it.  Volunteer one hour of your time to help someone with something: help your teachers grade papers, help the next door neighbor with their weeds.  Go get some warm fuzzies!  Better yet, get some warm fuzzies and then spread them around!
